Dear Mik and Mike: My boyfriend, who drives like a maniac, was recently in accident that was completely his fault, although he says it wasn’t. He was driving a borrowed truck that doesn’t accelerate as fast as his does and he pulled one of his hairball moves while exiting the freeway. Somehow he hit a bus of Chinese tourists coming back from a gambling trip. He says it wasn’t his fault because if he were driving his own truck it would have never happened. I don’t follow his logic, but it gets worse. Instead of getting the bus driver’s insurance, license, registration, he only got his phone number, which guess what? Is FAKE! He’s driving me crazy. What do I do?
Pierre, one of our favorite consultants for Mik and Mike would answer this question in one simple word, “Idiot”! This is a serious problem, and I’m sure one of many. This is only a sign of things to come for you. Get out now while you have a chance! Or you could help him track down the Chinese tour bus. I wonder how many tour groups there were with tours to that location that day? It would take a little work but you could find them. Prosecute! But do you really want to go to all that trouble You’re not responsible for other people’s actions.
It sounds to me like your idiot boyfriend dodged a bullet. Since it was hit fault that he hit the bus, and now he can’t locate the Chinese tourists, he’s only out the damage to the borrowed vehicle. It’s possible these people had some immigration issues and don’t really want to be found. The problem here is really your boyfriend’s screwy logic and lack of responsibility. My advice to you is to make some clear boundaries so his irresponsible behavior doesn’t drag you into his drama.
