Dear Mik and Mike: I’m a man with an unusual question for you about proper restroom protocol. Last week I was at a local restaurant and went to use the restroom. It was large enough for several people to use at once. As I was finishing up, an acquaintance of mine walked in. Normally, we would have shaken hands, but as I was just re-packing myself, it didn’t feel right to offer my hand since this man could clearly see I hadn’t yet washed my hands. It was an awkward moment. What should I have done?
I’m referring this one over to Mike. Not having spent much time in the Men’s room I don’t think I’m the best person to answer, but I would suggest a loud, “Hey! Nice to see you!” and leave it at that. No hugging, no ass-patting on the way out.
I think the proper restroom protocol is to nod and not shake hands. I think a hug in the bathroom is out of the question. Talking is fine. You could also say, “I’d shake your hand but I just wiped my ass with mine”.
